Hedge Update 2011
The hedge at the rear of the Co Tops site was last laid in 2004. This year, some of the new growths had reached some 25 ft in height and were the thickness of a man’s leg! It was time to re-lay the trees into a living barrier. Thus, Donato Cinicolo (six times Herts County Hedge-laying champion) and his son Leo set to and redid the work.
By the time the hedge was laid, it was about 4 ft high and extremely dense. This is a perfect habitat for small birds, which like to nest in tight, low hedges. Previously, the 25 ft trees were only useful as homes for crows or jackdaws and magpies. In addition, the low growth provides good cover for small mammals like voles etc. In fact, the new hedge is a wonderful wildlife corridor.
It should grow vigorously by next Spring, and by Summer the regrowth should be 6 ft tall from the root. Most of the hedge is composed of Bullace Plum, from which Donato made some jam last year. We might have to wait a little while before more jam can be made!
